Janitor AI is a free character-chat website where you roleplay with bots that other users have written, on Janitor's own JLLM model or on a model you connect yourself. It is for adults only, keeps about 9,000 tokens of a chat in memory on the free tier, and sells a janitor+ subscription for $12.99 a month.
This guide was checked on 28 October 2026 from Delhi. We read Janitor's help centre, its newsroom, its status page and its App Store and Google Play listings. We also opened the site itself, signed out, in a desktop Chrome profile: the homepage loaded, while its search and character pages answered with a firewall block, shown below. Below: what Janitor AI is, how it works, whether it is free, what tokens mean, whether it is down, whether it is safe, how to log in, and what applies in India.

What is Janitor AI?
Janitor AI is a website where you chat, in character, with bots that other users have written and published. You pick a character, such as a rival, a bodyguard or a historically accurate Roman gladiator, write as yourself or as a persona, and the bot replies in the story. The site's own description on Google Play calls it a place to "step inside stories instead of just reading them", built for people who "love romantasy, fanfiction, and interactive stories". You will also see it written as JanitorAI, janitor.ai or, in fan shorthand, Janny AI.
The only official address is janitorai.com. Its homepage on 28 October 2026 read "Be anyone. Build anything. Join 15M+ users crafting living stories", with Login and Register buttons and a Popular row of characters under it.

janitorai.com on 28 October 2026 from a home broadband connection in Delhi, signed out: the site's own user claim is "15M+".
It launched on 1 June 2023 as a side project by Jan Zoltkowski, a developer who grew up in Australia and built it at a hackathon, according to Semafor's September 2023 interview with him. He told Semafor it reached one million users in 17 days and about three million by that September, with 2.5 billion messages exchanged.
Early chats ran on OpenAI's models. OpenAI sent a cease-and-desist letter in July 2023 and cut the site off, so Zoltkowski began training his own model on user conversations. That model is JLLM, the JanitorLLM that free chats run on today.
The newsroom's first post, signed "shep" in March 2025, put the site at "1.4M+ Daily Active Users in less than 2 years" and "billions of interactions a week". The help centre's welcome page counts "over 1.4million public bots". No newer official user figure has been published; the newsroom's last post before our check was dated 14 September 2026.
How does Janitor AI work?
Janitor AI works by sending your chat, the character's definition and your settings to a language model, which writes the next reply. Every Janitor AI chat goes through one of three routes, and which model answers is the main choice you make.
Route | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
JLLM (default) | Free | Janitor's own model. Unlimited chats, "standard chat models", a context limit of around 9k tokens |
janitor+ | $12.99 a month | 5x the context, unlimited priority messages, monthly "swipes" (regenerated replies) on stronger models, and access to Router |
Your own key (proxy) | Whatever the provider charges | API integration through the proxy settings: connect OpenRouter, Gemini or another provider. Janitor's guide for OpenRouter says free accounts get 50 messages a day, or 1,000 a day with $10 of credit |
The web API settings page was redesigned on 19 July 2026 into four sections: General (provider and response length), Instructions (custom prompts, prefills and forbidden words), Generation controls (temperature and max tokens) and a Save button. Response length offers Standard or Shorter.
If you connect OpenRouter, the API URL must be exactly https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions, per the help centre's error guide; an API key works like a password, so never paste it anywhere but your own settings. What community guides call a "reverse proxy" is someone else's key behind a shared URL; every chat then passes through that stranger's server. If "API" is new to you, our plain explanation of what an API is covers the idea.
Character creation is open to any account. You write the personality, scenario and example dialogue, add an image, tag the bot, and publish or schedule it. Since January 2026 creators get an analytics dashboard covering impressions, clicks, chat engagement and retention, and Creator Verification applications reopened in July 2026. Creators can also add scripts (logic that runs beyond the prompt, in beta since September 2025), publish chats for others to read and fork (since 31 March 2026), and restrict a bot to accounts at least 30 days old.
Every character carries a content tag: "Limited" content must have "no sexual or romantic characteristics, themes, scenarios, or details", while anything with sexual or romantic themes must be marked "Limitless", under the help centre's tag rules. Logged-out visitors may also see ads on character pages, which Janitor began testing in September 2025 to fund its model.
Is Janitor AI free?
Yes. Janitor AI is free to use, with unlimited chats on the JLLM model, and its subscription FAQ says it "will always keep a free option available for everyone". The paid tier, janitor+, launched on 24 June 2026 at $12.99 a month; it is the site's first subscription.

Janitor's own announcement of janitor+, read on 28 October 2026: $12.99 a month, and the free version "stays completely free".
The subscription FAQ, last updated on 25 June 2026, lists what each tier includes:
Free: "Unlimited chats with millions of bots", "Access to standard chat models" and a "Context limit of around 9k tokens".
janitor+: "5x more context for better memory", priority access for faster replies, "Monthly swipes with our best models", a golden username and checkmark, and comment react emojis.

The help centre's subscription FAQ on 28 October 2026: what the free tier includes, and the promise that it stays.
Subscribers can also use janitor+ Router, launched on 30 July 2026, which runs third-party models inside Janitor without a proxy. It is billed per token from a prepaid wallet, with 10 percent off "some of the most popular models". The launch post offered $5 in free credits; the help centre's Router article, updated on 21 October 2026, now says $1, expiring a year after you claim it. Router is web-only and for subscribers only, and Janitor says it is "not a replacement" for JLLM+.
Cancelling is done under Settings, Billing, Manage Subscription on the web (it opens a Stripe page), or through the App Store or Google Play if you subscribed in the app. The plan stays active until the end of the billing period, then reverts to free. Subscriptions and Router credits are "generally non-refundable, except where required by our Terms of Service or applicable law". Billing questions go to billing@janitorai.com.

The Indian App Store listing on 28 October 2026. Its in-app purchases list Janitor+ Monthly at ₹1,299 and Janitor+ Annual at ₹9,900.
What are tokens in Janitor AI?
Tokens are the pieces of text a language model reads and writes, roughly three-quarters of an English word each, and Janitor's free JLLM model can hold "around 8k-9k tokens, give or take" of a chat at once. That window, the context, is why a bot forgets what happened a few replies ago in a long chat. The help centre's memory guide, updated on 11 August 2026, calls the effect "context rot": "If you overload it, stuff gets pushed out of memory or starts degrading."

Janitor's own figure for the free tier's memory, 8k to 9k tokens, on 28 October 2026.

The token count at the foot of each character card on janitorai.com, 28 October 2026: the size of the definition the model reads before your first message.
Three things follow from that number:
Character definitions count. A long personality, scenario and example dialogue use up the same window as your messages. Every card on the homepage shows its definition's size: in the Popular row on 28 October 2026, "Mafia Boss" was 462 tokens, "Willson Wáng" 612 and "Second Life Isekai" 3.3k, so that last one leaves well under 6,000 tokens of a free chat for the conversation itself. The guide's advice is to ask the bot for a recap every so often and paste it into the chat memory, so "the important stuff" survives even hundreds of messages in.
janitor+ multiplies the window. Janitor advertises "5x more context" without publishing a token figure; five times 9,000 is about 45,000 tokens.
"Max tokens" is a different setting. In Generation controls it caps the length of each reply, not the memory. Response length offers Standard or Shorter.
If you connect your own key, the provider's limits apply instead. Janitor's OpenRouter guide says a free OpenRouter account gets 50 messages a day, rising to 1,000 a day with $10 or more in credit, and that error messages count against the cap.
Is Janitor AI down right now?
Janitor AI's official status page at status.janitorai.com showed "All Systems Operational", with 100 percent uptime for both its backend and frontend over 45 days, when we loaded it at 00:59 IST on 28 October 2026 (19:29 UTC on 27 October). That page, run on openstatus, is the one the help centre tells users to check.

Janitor's official status page on 28 October 2026: everything green for 45 days.
That green bar does not match what users reported. StatusGator, which monitors the page and collects user reports, logged seven incidents between 4 and 22 October 2026, lasting 41 minutes to 1 hour 43 minutes. Their titles include "Service unavailable due to high traffic and connectivity issues" on 20 October and "App not loading due to server not responding" on 22 October. All seven are marked "Never acknowledged" on the official page. StatusGator counts "more than 22 outages" since it began monitoring in May 2026.

User-reported incidents in October 2026 on StatusGator, none acknowledged on Janitor's status page.
The company does write up the big ones. On 14 September 2026 it explained that search and browsing had broken on 10 and 11 September. Cloudflare had reported a huge spike in rate-limited search traffic, on servers already "continuously running above 90% CPU"; Janitor then grew search capacity from three to ten nodes. Earlier, the May 2026 post on what scale taught the team lists DDoS attacks among the things it has to absorb.
When a chat fails, check in this order:
status.janitorai.com, then the official Discord and r/JanitorAI_Official, where staff post during incidents.
Your model. If you use a proxy, a "network error" or a reply that stops midway usually comes from the provider or a wrong API URL, not from Janitor. The help centre's fix is to re-check the URL, save, and reload the whole site.
A firewall page. An "Access Restricted" page saying your access "has been blocked by our firewall" is Cloudflare screening, not an outage and, the help centre says, not a ban. On 28 October 2026 our automated browser got that page for every route, and a normal desktop Chrome profile from the same connection got the homepage but still hit it on search and character pages.

What our automated browser got from janitorai.com on 28 October 2026: the firewall page, not the site. A normal desktop profile got past it on the homepage only.
Is Janitor AI safe?
Janitor AI is an adults-only site with explicit content behind a tag, its own 18+ rule, and age checks in three countries. It is as safe as the user's own age and judgement, and it is not for anyone under 18. The content policy's minor-content page, updated on 21 August 2026, states that the services are "exclusively intended for an audience above the age of 18". Users "reasonably suspected to be under the age" of 18 "will be permanently banned", and any character whose age is unspecified or vague "will be treated as underage for enforcement purposes".
Four facts decide how that plays out in practice:
Age verification exists only in Australia, Brazil and the UK. Since 24 April 2026 (Australia and Brazil) and 15 June 2026 (UK), users connecting from those countries verify once through k-ID. The options are a video selfie processed on the device, a government ID photo, or an AgeKey reused from Discord or Snapchat. Janitor says it "receives only a yes/no answer on whether you are over 18. Nothing else", that detection is IP-based, and that it has "no plans to extend age verification to any other region". Everywhere else, including India and the United States, age is self-declared.
The app starts in Safe Mode. NSFW content "is disabled when you first download the app": such bots do not appear in search, the model is tuned for safe replies, and explicit words are blocked. Turning it on needs a web login and the "Enable NSFW for App" toggle in Settings. The web site itself is unchanged.
Store ratings disagree with the policy. Google Play in India rates the app "16+" for sexual content, Apple's App Store rates it 18+, and Janitor's own rule is 18+.
Your chats train the model. Zoltkowski told Semafor in 2023 that he was training Janitor's model on millions of hand-picked user conversations. We could not read the current privacy policy: janitorai.com/privacy and /terms returned 404 to our tools, and the help centre has no article on chat privacy. Treat anything you type as stored on Janitor's servers.

Janitor's age-verification page on 28 October 2026: what k-ID keeps, and the yes/no that is all Janitor receives.

The four steps that lift the app's Safe Mode, from the help centre on 28 October 2026.
Moderation is the other side of safety, and in October 2026 it is what users complain about. A YouTube video titled "Why Many Users Are Leaving JANITOR AI Right Now", posted on 8 October 2026, sits in Google's top stories for the name. It repeats user claims of bans without a stated reason and rejected appeals, with no evidence beyond the posts themselves. A Trustpilot review from 14 October says the site is "banning any thing that moves"; the profile has only 35 reviews, scoring 2.5 out of 5.
Janitor's position, set out in a help page on why it does not discuss moderator actions, is that privacy law limits what it can say and that "public callouts aren't going to convince the skeptics". Its appeal route: first rule out a blocked tag or a Cloudflare page, then raise a ticket or email support@janitorai.com under Account Support with your exact username or profile link. A rejected appeal is final.

The ban-appeal steps on the help centre, 28 October 2026. Without the exact username the ticket may be closed unanswered.
Why are people saying Janitor AI is going downhill?
Because the site changed a lot in eighteen months, and each change produced a wave of "Janitor is dying" posts, but the usage figures do not show a decline. The Reddit thread Google ranks second for the name, "Why are people claiming downfall of janitor.ai", was started on 30 June 2026 by a user who could see nothing wrong beyond bots giving "much safer responses", and who noted that the site was still free. The top reply: "This is a pretty fickle community. Most dislike changes made not under their terms."
Its October 2026 comments were removed by Reddit or by the subreddit's moderators, who delete promotion of rival chatbot sites, so the thread no longer says what the current complaints are. The newsroom and help centre do:
When | What changed | What users said |
|---|---|---|
24 July 2025 | UK blocked over the Online Safety Act | Lost a whole country; access returned with age checks in June 2026 |
September 2025 | Ads tested on character pages for logged-out visitors | "Janitor is going paid"; the free tier stayed |
February 2026 | Official app launched in Safe Mode, NSFW off by default | "The app is censored"; the toggle is on the website |
April to June 2026 | ID-based age verification in Australia, Brazil and the UK | Privacy fears; Janitor receives a yes/no only, and no other region is planned |
24 June 2026 | janitor+, the first subscription, at $12.99 | "Paywall incoming"; the launch post promised the free version "stays completely free" |
10 to 11 September 2026 | Search and browsing broke for two days | "The site is dying"; Janitor published a post-mortem and tripled search capacity |
October 2026 | Bans and bot removals without stated reasons | Creators announcing they are leaving; Janitor says privacy law stops it discussing cases |
Against that, every signal we could measure on 28 October 2026 points up or flat. Google searches for the name are 2.1 million a month in the US and rising, with Ahrefs forecasting 2.7 million. The Android app had 10L+ installs and a 4.7-star average from 21.6K reviews, and both apps shipped updates in mid-October. The help centre's Router page was edited on 21 October, r/JanitorAI_Official carried a stream of new character posts on 27 October, and the status page showed 45 clean days.
The complaints are about moderation and model tuning, which are real, and not about a service that is shutting down. If a rule change or a ban is what you are reading about, the appeal route and the content rules above are the parts that apply to you.
How do you log in to Janitor AI, and is there an app?
The Janitor AI login page is janitorai.com/login, the same account also works in the official app, Janitor: Interactive Stories, and installation is from the two store listings only. The help centre lists two official apps, App Store id 6692609366 and Google Play package com.janitor.ai, and says "These are the only official JanitorAI apps". That matters because Janitor warned in February 2026 about fake apps on the stores before its own went live on 7 February 2026.

The Google Play listing from India on 28 October 2026: 4.7 stars, 21.6K reviews, 10L+ downloads, rated 16+.
Things that trip up new accounts:
Some creators restrict their bots to accounts at least 30 days old. The message reads "Your account needs to be at least 30 days old to interact with this creator", and there is no workaround.
Your @username can be changed from profile settings, with a 30-day cooldown between changes (since April 2026).
The app's NSFW toggle lives on the web, not in the app, as described above.
An "Access Restricted" firewall page is not a login failure. Try a normal browser on a normal connection; on 28 October 2026 ours reached the homepage but was refused on the login, search and character pages.
Janitor AI vs Character AI and other alternatives
Character AI is the bigger app and Janitor AI is the one that allows adult romance, which is the whole difference for most people choosing between them. On the US App Store on 28 October 2026, Character AI's app had 560,471 ratings averaging 4.3 stars and Janitor's 5,270 ratings averaging 4.5. Both are rated 17+ there, and Janitor is 18+ in India.
Janitor's "Limitless" tag admits sexual and romantic themes that its "Limited" tier bans, while Character AI positions itself as a general-audience app. Both let users publish characters; Janitor also lets you connect your own model, which Character AI does not. Other alternatives that appear in the same searches are CrushOn AI and SpicyChat; we have not tested them. If companion apps are what you are weighing, our Poly AI review covers the same questions for PolyBuzz.
Janitor AI in India
India is Janitor AI's fifth-largest search market, at about 243,000 Google searches a month against 2.1 million in the United States (Ahrefs, October 2026), and nothing about the service changes here: no age verification, the same free tier, the same 18+ rule. The Android app shows 10L+ downloads, 4.7 stars from 21.6K reviews and a "Rated for 16+" label on the Indian Play Store, with its last update on 13 October 2026. The iOS app is 113.8 MB, needs iOS 15.5 or later, and had 103 Indian ratings averaging 4.3 stars at version 2.7.0 of 14 October 2026 on the Indian App Store.
Prices in rupees exist only through the app stores: Janitor+ Monthly at ₹1,299 and Janitor+ Annual at ₹9,900 on the Indian App Store. On the web, janitor+ is billed in dollars through Stripe at $12.99 a month, about ₹1,090 at late-October rates before any bank markup, so the web price is cheaper if your card allows foreign payments. Router credits are also dollar-denominated.
How this was checked
On 28 October 2026, from a home broadband connection in Delhi, we read Janitor's help centre: the subscription, Router, memory, age-verification, minor-content, mobile-moderation, ban-appeal, status and app FAQ pages, each with its own "Updated on" date. We read its newsroom from March 2025 to September 2026, its status page, StatusGator's incident log, Trustpilot and Semafor's 2023 interview. The Indian App Store and Google Play listings were dumped as text and screenshotted. Every screenshot above was captured that night and is cropped to the lines it supports. The Ahrefs figures are from the SERP of 26 October 2026 and one keyword report (192 units).
What we could only partly do: use janitorai.com itself. Playwright's default headless browser got the "Access Restricted" page on every route. A full Chromium with a desktop Chrome user-agent string, from the same connection, loaded the homepage, where we captured the hero and the Popular row, but the search page, the login page and a character page from the homepage's own links returned the same firewall block.
So there is no signed-out chat test: we could not reach a Chat button. The privacy and terms pages returned 404 to our fetcher. The scripts and their logs are in the draft's tests folder. Reddit's thread on the "downfall of janitor.ai" that Google ranks second had its October comments removed or deleted, so we did not quote it.
Frequently asked questions
What is Janitor AI used for?
Roleplay and interactive fiction: chatting in character with user-made bots, from romance and fanfiction to historical and adventure scenarios, and writing and publishing your own characters, personas and scripts.
Is Janitor AI free?
Yes. The free tier gives unlimited chats on the JLLM model with a context limit of around 9k tokens, and Janitor says it "will always keep a free option available". janitor+ costs $12.99 a month, or ₹1,299 a month and ₹9,900 a year in India's App Store.
Is Janitor AI down?
Check status.janitorai.com, the official status page. It showed all systems operational on 28 October 2026, though StatusGator logged seven user-reported incidents in October 2026 that the page never acknowledged. Staff post updates on the official Discord and r/JanitorAI_Official.
Is Janitor AI safe?
It is an adults-only site. Explicit content is allowed under the Limitless tag, minors are banned on suspicion, and age is checked by ID only in Australia, Brazil and the UK. The app starts with NSFW off. Chats are stored, and the founder has said user conversations trained the model, so do not type anything you would not want kept.
What are tokens in Janitor AI?
Tokens are the units of text the model reads, about three-quarters of a word each. Free JLLM holds around 8k to 9k tokens of a chat; older messages fall out after that. janitor+ gives five times the context. "Max tokens" in Generation controls limits reply length, not memory.
Is Janitor AI 18+?
Yes, by its own rules: the services are "exclusively intended for an audience above the age of 18". Google Play in India labels the app 16+ and Apple labels it 18+, but Janitor permanently bans users it reasonably suspects are under 18.
Does Janitor AI have an app?
Yes, Janitor: Interactive Stories, on the App Store (id 6692609366) and Google Play (com.janitor.ai), in public beta since 7 February 2026. Those are the only official apps; install from those listings and nowhere else. The app downloads in Safe Mode; NSFW is enabled from Settings on the website.
Can I use Janitor AI without an API key?
Yes. JLLM is the default and needs no key. A key is only needed if you want another provider's model through the proxy settings, or you can subscribe to janitor+ and use Router, which bills per token without a key.
Is Janitor AI shutting down?
There is no sign of it. On 28 October 2026 the status page showed 45 days without an outage, both apps had October updates, Google searches for the name were rising, and the newsroom's last post, in September, was a post-mortem on fixing search. The "downfall" posts track moderation changes and bans, not a closure.
Why was my Janitor AI account banned?
Janitor does not state reasons publicly. First confirm it is a ban rather than a blocked tag or a Cloudflare page, then raise a ticket or email support@janitorai.com under Account Support with your exact username or profile link. A rejected appeal is final; the most common permanent ban is for suspected under-18 use or minor-coded content.
