Gemini AI is Google's AI assistant: the Gemini app on the web, Android and iOS, and the family of Gemini models behind it. It is free to use, even without a Google account, on the Flash-Lite model. Paid plans in India cost ₹399, ₹1,950 and from ₹6,500 a month, and the top two include the new Gemini 4 Argon model.
This guide was checked on 26 October 2026 from Delhi. We opened gemini.google.com in a fresh browser without signing in and got an answer. Then we read Google's own plan, limits and privacy pages, its help centre, its blog posts from September and October 2026, and the app-store listings. Below: what Gemini AI is, whether it is free, what it costs, where the limits are, how to use it, how to switch it off, and what applies in India.

What is Gemini AI?
Gemini AI is two things that share a name. One is the Gemini app, the chatbot and assistant you open at gemini.google.com or install on a phone. The other is the Gemini family of models that answer inside that app and inside Google Search, Chrome, Gmail, Docs and Android. The app began as Bard in February 2023 and took the Gemini name on 8 February 2024, per Wikipedia's history. The same page records that it replaced Google Assistant as Android's default assistant that month.

gemini.google.com as it loaded on October 26, 2026 from Delhi, signed out: a prompt box on Flash-Lite and no login wall.
It is now one of the most used apps on earth. Alphabet's second-quarter 2026 results put the Gemini app at over 950 million monthly users, and in August Sundar Pichai said on X it was "recently surpassing 1 billion", as TechCrunch reported. The same report has Google saying 63% of users talk to it by voice and that it generates more than 150 million images a day.
The models change every few months. The current flagship is Gemini 4 Argon, announced on 30 September 2026 and, per TechCrunch, first given to cyber-security partners before paid subscribers. Google's September roundup also lists Gemini 3.8 Flash for everyday speed, Gemini 3.8 Live for voice, Lyria 3.5 for music and Gemini Omni for video. The Android listing on Google Play names Nano Banana 2 as the image model.
Is Gemini AI free?
Yes, and you do not even need an account for the basics. On 26 October 2026 we opened gemini.google.com in a fresh, signed-out browser from a home connection in Delhi. The page showed "Meet Gemini, your personal AI assistant" with the model selector reading Flash-Lite, and no sign-in wall. We typed one question and got an answer in under 40 seconds.

Our signed-out test on October 26, 2026: Gemini answered on Flash-Lite. The composer notes that signing in is needed to "connect to Google apps, create images, and more".
Gemini's own reply began: "Yes, you can use Gemini without signing into a Google account via its public web interface". It added that logging in "unlocks advanced features like chat history and Gemini Advanced". The second half is slightly out of date, since Google renamed Gemini Advanced to the Google AI plans, but the first half matched what we saw. The script and result are in the "How this was checked" section.
With a free Google account you get more. Google's India plans page lists the free tier as the Flash-Lite model, image creation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems. It adds Gemini Notebook, limited Nano Banana Pro access in Google Flow and 15 GB of storage shared with Gmail, Drive and Photos. The catch is usage, covered under limits below: free users are the first to be throttled when demand is high.
Two groups in India can get paid plans free. Jio users aged 18 or over on an unlimited 5G plan of ₹349 or more can claim 18 months of Google AI Pro through the MyJio app, per Jio's offer page. Jio values that at ₹35,100; it is once per number and lasts only while the plan stays active. College students in India can redeem a year of Google AI Plus until 31 December 2026 at one.google.com/ai-student, with a payment method on file.
How much does Gemini AI cost?
Three paid tiers, all sold as Google AI plans through Google One. The rupee prices below are from the India page and the dollar prices from the US page, both read on 26 October 2026.

Google's India plans page on October 26, 2026: ₹0, ₹399, ₹1,950 and from ₹6,500 a month, with Gemini 4 Argon on Pro and Ultra.
Plan | India | US | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
Free | ₹0 | $0 | Flash-Lite, images, Deep Research, Live, Canvas, Gems, Notebook, 15 GB |
Google AI Plus | ₹399 a month | $4.99 a month | Flash model, 2x the free usage, video generation, 200 Flow credits, Gemini in Gmail and Vids, 400 GB |
Google AI Pro | ₹1,950 a month | $19.99 a month | Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash, 4x the free usage, 1,000 Flow credits, Gemini in Docs, YouTube Premium Lite, 5 TB |
Google AI Ultra | ₹6,500 or ₹19,500 a month | $99.99 or $199.99 a month | 5x or 20x the Pro limits, highest Argon access, early access to Tasks in Gemini, 10,000 or 25,000 Flow credits, Project Genie, YouTube Premium, 20 TB+ |
Three terms from the same page are worth knowing before paying. AI Pro and some features need you to be 18 or over and on a personal account. You can cancel any time, but there are "no refunds for partial billing periods, except as required by applicable law". And the plans page does not say whether GST is included in the rupee prices, so expect the checkout to show the final figure.
Does Gemini AI have a limit?
Yes, on every plan, and since May 2026 the limit is a budget of compute rather than a count of prompts. Google's help article on Gemini Apps limits says: "Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit." How fast you use it depends on "the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat".

Google's limits article on October 26, 2026: compute-based, a 5-hour refresh, a weekly cap, and age rules by region.
The paid plans multiply the same budget. Per the article, AI Plus is "2x higher than standard limits", AI Pro "4x higher", and AI Ultra "5x or 20x higher than AI Pro limits depending on your subscription". Media generation and Deep Research "will consume more of your usage", and video needs the most. You can see where you stand at gemini.google.com under Settings, then Usage Limits.
Free users feel the limit first. The article says that in high demand "some features that require more compute resources, like Deep Research, may be unavailable". Limits for people without a plan "may be limited before users with a plan". A subscriber who hits the cap can keep chatting on Flash-Lite. The context window also scales: about 32,000 tokens on the free tier, 128,000 on AI Plus and 1 million on AI Pro, according to 9to5Google's plan breakdown.
How to use Gemini AI
Open gemini.google.com or the Gemini app, type or speak, and attach files, photos or a camera view when the question needs them. Everything below is Google's own description of the current app, from its about page, its September 2026 updates and the Play listing:
Gemini Live: a voice conversation that can see your screen or camera; the Live models were updated in September 2026.
Images: generate and edit photos with Nano Banana 2 on the free plan after signing in; Nano Banana Pro edits are a paid feature.
Deep Research: a long, cited report on a question; free, but the first thing to go when servers are busy.
Gemini Notebook: upload notes or documents and get grounded answers, flashcards, quizzes and audio or short video overviews.
Canvas: a side-by-side editor for drafts, code, web pages and small apps.
Connected apps: Gmail, Calendar, Photos, YouTube, Maps and, since September, third-party apps such as Airtable and Adobe.
Personal Intelligence: an opt-in setting that lets Gemini draw on your Gmail, Photos, Maps and YouTube. It reached Android Auto on 20 October 2026, per Google's blog, and is not offered in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria.
Desktop: a Windows app opened with Alt and Space, a Mac app, and Gemini in Chrome on desktop via the "Ask Gemini" button. Chrome's agentic "auto browse" is for Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US only, per Google's Chrome page.
The app itself was reorganised in late September 2026. 9to5Google describes the new side panel: Search at the top right, chat history with filters, and a Scheduled entry. A Customize area with a Discover tab for skills and connectors "feels like a mini-app store for Gemini", the site says. That is the "super app" the videos in Google's AI Overview are describing.
Gemini AI photo editing: what is free and what is paid
The searches for "gemini ai photo" are about one feature: upload a picture, describe the change, get a new image. On the free plan, after signing in, that runs on Nano Banana 2. The Play listing describes it as applying "camera and lighting controls", blending several images into mockups and designing posters with sharp text. Our signed-out test could not create images at all; the composer said to sign in for that.
The higher-quality Nano Banana Pro is a paid feature in the app, listed under AI Plus and above in 9to5Google's plan table as "Redo images with Nano Banana Pro". Google had already cut the free allowance to two Pro images a day in November 2025 "due to high demand", per Engadget. Video is paid too: Gemini Omni video generation needs AI Plus, Pro, Ultra or a Workspace plan, per the Play listing. Image and video generation also drain the usage budget faster than text, so a free account doing a lot of photo work will hit the five-hour limit first.
Gemini AI prompts: Gems are becoming Skills
A Gem was a saved set of instructions you could chat with. From October 2026 the replacement is a skill: "a set of reusable instructions and additional context" that Gemini applies inside any chat, per Google's skills help page. You create one by asking Gemini in a chat, by filling a template on the Skills page, or by uploading a folder with a SKILL.md file. That is the same open format other AI tools use. You call one by typing "/" (or "@" on newer builds) and picking it, and several can stack in one task.
Skills need a signed-in user aged 18 or over with Keep Activity on, but not a paid plan. "You don't need a Google AI subscription to use skills in chats", the page says. The dates for personal accounts are firm. On 17 November 2026 Gems become read-only, and on 17 December 2026 they are removed and converted to skills automatically, per the transition page; download any files first. Work and school accounts keep Gems longer, until at least 1 March 2027 for business and 1 June 2027 for education, per the Workspace blog.

Google's own timeline for Gems and skills, read on October 26, 2026.
Good prompts have not changed with the rename. State the job, the audience and the format, attach the source material rather than describing it, and ask for a draft you can iterate on. A skill is simply that preamble saved once.
How to turn off Gemini AI
There is no single switch, because Gemini sits in several products. These are Google's own paths, each linked to the help page it comes from:
Android assistant: open Settings, then Apps, Default apps, Digital assistant app, and set Default digital assistant app to a different app or None, per Google's help page. Deleting the Gemini app "doesn't automatically remove Gemini as your device's default digital assistant", so change this setting either way.
Lock screen: in the Gemini app, go to Settings, Gemini on lock screen, and turn off "Use Gemini without unlocking".
Gmail: open Settings, See all settings, General, and untick "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet", per Gmail help. This removes the Gemini side panel too and applies on every device.
Chrome: open the Chrome menu, Settings, AI innovations, Gemini in Chrome, per Chrome help. Switch off the toggles for showing Gemini at the top of the browser and in the menu bar or system tray.
Personal Intelligence and app connections: off in the Gemini app's settings at any time.
Your data: turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity, or use a temporary chat; see the privacy section below.
The Play listing is candid about the trade. Once you opt in, Gemini "will replace your Google Assistant as the primary assistant on the phone". On phones that still carry Assistant, "You can switch back to Google Assistant in settings".
Is Gemini AI safe to use?
Read the privacy notice before you paste anything sensitive. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, updated 13 October 2026, says that with Keep Activity on, Google uses your activity "to provide, develop, and improve its services (including training generative AI models)". With it off, future chats "won't be used to train our AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback", and are kept "for 72 hours". Temporary chats are also excluded from training.
People read some chats. "A subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers", the notice says, and "Reviewed chats are retained for up to three years". Google's own advice follows: "Please don't enter confidential information that you wouldn't want a reviewer to see". Activity otherwise auto-deletes after 18 months unless you change it. Schools get a different deal: on Gemini for Education, "Your data is not human-reviewed or used to train AI models".
The record has rough patches. Wikipedia's account lists the February 2024 pause of people images and a November 2024 response telling a student to die, which Google said broke its policies. It also records a wrongful-death lawsuit filed in March 2026 and a September 2026 Wall Street Journal report that Gemini breached three companies during authorised security testing. None of that changes the basics: treat it like any cloud service, keep secrets out, and switch Keep Activity off if you want chats out of training.
Gemini AI vs ChatGPT
The Gemini vs ChatGPT question has a short answer: by the numbers the two are level. OpenAI's ChatGPT also passed a billion monthly users in 2026, as the TechCrunch report on Gemini's milestone notes. On India's App Store, ChatGPT is rated 4.7 from about 2.19 million ratings and Gemini 4.5 from 884,212, per Apple's search API on 26 October 2026. On Google Play, Gemini shows 1 billion+ downloads and 4.4 stars from 5 crore reviews.
The practical difference is where each one lives. Gemini is wired into Search's AI Mode, Chrome, Gmail, Docs, Android and cars, and its free tier answers without an account. ChatGPT is a standalone app with its own ecosystem. OpenAI even ranks a page about Gemini at chatgpt.com/google-gemini-ai for this search, which showed only a login screen when we opened it in an automated browser.
Gemini AI in India
India is Gemini's second-largest market by searches, after Indonesia, and Google prices it in rupees. The India plans page lists ₹399, ₹1,950 and ₹6,500 or ₹19,500 a month, with the free tier at ₹0. The Jio deal above is the cheapest way to AI Pro, and the student offer the cheapest way to AI Plus. Both are Google and Jio pages, not resellers.

The Gemini app on Google Play India, October 26, 2026: 4.4 stars from 5 crore reviews and over a billion downloads.
Two regional notes. Personal Intelligence, which lets Gemini use your Gmail, Photos and Maps, is available in India because the exclusions are the EEA, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria, per Google's October 2026 post. And Google's plan page says Gemini 4 Argon, Nano Banana Pro and Deep Search inside Search's AI Mode are "available only in select countries", without naming them. Check AI Mode on your own account rather than assuming.
How this was checked
Everything above was read on 26 October 2026 from a home broadband connection in Delhi. Prices, plan contents and the no-refund wording come from Google's India and US plan pages. The limits, privacy, skills, Gems, Android and Chrome details come from the Google help pages linked beside each claim, and the September and October 2026 announcements from Google's own blogs. User numbers come from Alphabet's SEC filing and TechCrunch's reports; app ratings from Google Play India and Apple's App Store search API.
The no-account test used a Playwright script that opens gemini.google.com in a fresh Chromium profile with no Google login. It records the landing page, sends one prompt and saves the reply and a screenshot. The script, its README and its JSON result are kept with this article's draft. We did not subscribe to any plan, so the paid tiers are described from Google's pages, not from use.
